MEDIA ALERT: Climate justice activists across the continent will unite on Africa day demanding the African Development Bank commit to a just transition to 100% renewable energy in Africa

Africa — Members of the media are invited to attend demonstrations happening outside the offices of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in the following locations across the continent:  Ivory Coast, Togo,  Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. The planned demonstrations fall on Africa day and have been organised by various civil society organisations and climate justice activists throughout the region. Activists are using this moment to demand that AfDB commits to Africa’s transition to 100% Renewable Energy by excluding all fossil fuel financing from their investment portfolios and shifting investments towards socially-owned and gender-inclusive climate finance. A just transition to renewable energy is increasingly critical as climate change and its impacts become more and more threatening to societies and people living in Africa.

The main demands of climate justice activists in the region include:

  1. AfDB to be 100% transparent and switch to 100% renewable energy in its power lending portfolios
  2. AfDB to develop and implement a fossil fuel finance exclusion policy.
  3. AfDB to engage meaningfully with CSOs

Activists across the continent are uniting on the above demands to the AfDB and preparing to deliver a civil society position paper (Fr) to the various AfDB locations across the region. A key target for delivery of a CSO position paper will be at the AfDB 57th Annual Meeting and the 48th Annual Meeting of the African Development Fund happening on Tuesday 24th to Friday 27th May 2022 in Accra, Ghana at the International Conference Center.
