In the heart of Western Uganda, nestled among the lush landscapes of Hoima, communities once thriving on agriculture are now grappling with displacement and the grim realities brought by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). For many here, what was promised as a pathway to progress has turned into a struggle for survival. But amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope is emerging – REPower Afrika, a campaign dedicated to empowering communities through clean, affordable, and sustainable renewable energy solutions.
Stories of Resilience and Hope
Kijumba: Farming Dreams Dimmed by Displacement
Kijumba village, a community of hardworking farmers, is reeling from the impact of losing ancestral lands to the EACOP project. Compensation provided was not enough to purchase new land, leaving many without a place to farm or even basic amenities like electricity. Yet, their spirit remains unbroken.
Scovia Kyomuhendo, a displaced resident, voices her struggle:
“The compensation was too little, and now land is too expensive. But I am hopeful for REPower Afrika, which offers us solar energy – a reliable, sustainable solution that can help rebuild our lives and protect the environment.”
For these families, solar energy represents more than just electricity. It symbolizes a chance to regain control over their livelihoods, enabling irrigation for farming and lighting for their homes.
Kyakabooga Resettlement Village: Struggling to Adapt
The Kyakabooga resettlement village was designed to provide a fresh start for 46 families. However, this new way of living has confined families to small three-bedroom homes, with farms located miles away. Most homes, despite being connected to the national grid, remain dark because the cost of electricity is unaffordable.
Gibato Grace, a mother in Kyakabooga, highlights their plight:
“The electricity is expensive, unreliable, and not suited to our needs. We were better off with solar before. Solar energy is affordable, easy to use, and aligns with our way of life. We urgently need it back.”
Elasty, another resident, echoes the sentiment:
“I thought the government would cover the electricity bills as part of compensation. Without a strong livelihood, it’s impossible to pay for expensive bills and still provide for my family. Solar energy was better for us, and we hope to see it return.”
Amplifying the Call for Renewable Energy
In October, with the support of our local partner, AFIEGO, we visited these communities to bring the message of REPower Afrika and listen to their needs. We also hosted the REnergy Workshop in Kampala, bringing together 20 NGOs to address Uganda’s energy challenges. The insights were clear: Uganda’s energy grid is expensive, unreliable, and inaccessible to over half the population. The future lies in renewable energy.
To achieve this, we need to mobilize resources for solar installations and mini-grids, train communities and technicians in renewable energy technologies, and advocate for supportive policies and better regulatory enforcement. We must also conduct technical assessments to implement community-based solutions effectively.
Your Role in the REPower Movement
The testimonies of Scovia, Grace, and Elasty highlight the urgency of our mission. Communities affected by fossil fuel projects need more than promises – they need tangible support. With your help, we can install solar panels, develop mini-grids, and create opportunities for families to thrive. By donating to the REPower Afrika campaign, you are not just providing electricity. You are empowering women like Grace to run small businesses, supporting farmers like those in Kijuumba to irrigate their crops, and giving children a brighter future to study under the glow of solar-powered lights.
Africa’s future is renewable, and it starts with communities like those in Hoima. Together, we can turn displacement into resilience, struggle into sustainability, and hope into action. Stand with us and be part of the movement to create a fossil-free, renewable-powered Africa.
Donate now to REPower Afrika and make a lasting impact.
Together, let’s bring light, hope, and opportunity to communities that need it the most.
