A group civil society organisations in Kenya, under the #deCOALonise banner, are marching this morning in Nairobi to deliver an open letter to Judy Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretariat at the Ministry of Environment & Natural Resources denouncing the coal development in Kenya, in relation to the proposed coal plant in Lamu and coal mining projects in Kitui. They’re taking to the streets to express their deep concerns vis-a-vis a certain growing appetite for coal expansion which is likely to pose serious risks in terms of health effects, air pollution, water quality and environmental degradation at large for the current and future generations.
In the recent months, the resistance against coal expansion has been growing significantly among the Kenyan civil society and community at large, following continued anti-coal mobilisation and advocacy efforts to oppose the proposed Lamu coal plant and the court filed by Save Lamu organisation against the financiers of the project.
