Last Friday, 15th August, 350.org Malawi Global Power Shift team held road shows and public rallies in both Blantyre and Lilongwe to raise awareness on sustainable, renewable energy and mobilise youth and communities on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The road shows included talks on climate change, energy saving practices, waste management and highlighting what a green economy would look like through a fun quiz. The road show included well demonstrated drama acts highlighting climate impacts with a spice of local hip hop dancing. Climate change in semi-rural parts of Malawi is not widely understood and these interactive activities certainly helped people understand and engage with the issue more. “This is an important first step in increasing awareness , making people feel more connected to an issue and then taking action”, said Harvey Chimaliro – Malawi Global Power Shift Coordinator.
The climate rally in Blantyre was attended by local ward councillor and also included a speech from the deputy mayor. Other activities included a talk on the actions that can be taken by youth towards a sustainable energy by Executive Director for Sustainable Rural Growth Development Initiative (SRGDI). The day was filled with inspiring talents which included comedy from popular stand up comedian Mr Jokes and poetry from Limbe Community Day Secondary School.
Malawi Global Power Shift team has done some incredible and valuable work and i would like to thank them for their dedication towards the climate movement!
